Nail files vary according to how strongly made they are and how fine the surface is. The higher the grit number , the finer the grit is on the surface, so the gentler the nail file is on the nails. Natural nails require a finer grit and we generally recommend at least a 180 grit nail file, however the level of grit a person should purchase for themselves really depends on how healthy and strong the nails are and on how good they are at handling the file. The aim with natural nails is always to smoothen the nail surface without thinning it more than necessary.
Slightly curved nail files have the advantage of making it easier to access the nail walls and cuticles.
Combination grit files have a courser and a smoother surface – one to shorten the nails and the other to smooth the edges of the nail plate or the surface of the nail plate.
Of course, professional manicurists will have a selection of different grit nail files chosen for their strength and their ability to be sanitized for each client. Regular clients of manicurists will often have their own reserved nail file.
